Article Processing Charges
When submitting an article to JSEP, the submitting author must agree to pay the publication charge minus any eligible discount (or request a waiver). After acceptance the article will enter the production cycle and the author will be asked to pay the publication charge for the journal minus any eligible discount. When final formatting corrections are made and the author approves their article for publication, payment of the publication charge must be received before the article will be published online. The Article processing charges are determined from time to time by the Editorial Board.
Prompt payment is advised, as the article will not be published until payment is received.
Article Processing Charges (APC) Information
JSEP publishes all its articles in full open access. This enables the scientific community and the general public to gain unlimited, free and immediate access to scholarly articles, and to reuse the content freely provided that proper attribution is given to the original authors.
To cover the cost for providing publishing service and free access to readers, authors pay Article processing charges for accepted manuscripts after peer-review. An article processing charge (APC) of KShs. 10,000 (Kenya Shillings) or USD 100 applies to papers accepted after peer review - Available Payment options. There are no charges for rejected articles, no submission charges, and no surcharges based on the length of an article, figures or supplementary data.
Article processing charge cover the following:
- The editorial procedure, including administration related to peer review, author revisions, and final decision-making. JSEP engages in-house staff to manage the majority of these processes. Editorial board members are devoted to making key scientific peer review decisions. The important work done by JSEP’s reviewers and editorial board members is appreciated by providing them with APC discounts and waivers. APCs also cover for the administrative work done for rejected articles.
- Article production: professional language editing, type-setting, formatting, and production in PDF, XML, HTML, and Epub formats.
- Article dissemination and registration: indexing databases, Digital object identifiers (DOI).
- Journal administration: including managing the journal website and editorial board, and promotion of the journal among the research community.
At JSEP, overheads and management costs are kept to a minimum and none of the journal management, production, or IT tasks are outsourced to third parties.
